We would like to urge the elected council of Mississippi Mills to endorse the proposed bylaw controlling the use of non-essential, cosmetic-use residential pesticides. Many other communities have taken this vital step to protecting the health of their residents, and we feel ours should follow suit. Thank you for your consideration and support in this important matter.
__________________________________________________________________________

Specifically, we ask for your support in the adoption of this bylaw for the following reasons:
Whereas: The Supreme Court of Canada has affirmed the right of municipalities to use the precautionary principle to do so;
Whereas: Many pesticides currently in use have been proven unsafe or have never been proven safe;
Whereas: It is impossible to avoid exposure to these pesticides if they are used in one's community;
Whereas: we cannot predict the risk of infants and children on the basis of adult evidence;
Whereas: Cosmetic pesticide use is unnecessary, and poses an needless and avoidable risk to the life and health of human beings, to our water, and to other plant and animal species (i.e. you favorite pet);
Whereas: Communities across Canada are increasingly implementing such bylaw;
Whereas: This bylaw does NOT affect agricultural and golf course operation;
Whereas: This bylaw allows for serious infestations to be treated under licensed operator control;

In Ontario alone, the communities of Caledon, Cobalt, Perth, St Catherines, Thorold, and Toronto have already passed such bylaws, and Ottawa and others are in the process. Quebec has recently passed a province wide law.

Sincerely,
signed the MMRA board and the community members as undersigned.
