Depuis de nombreuses années, les pressions exercées par des groupes «protectionnistes» ont conduit les Institutions Européennes à poser la question de l’intérêt de continuer à utiliser des primates non humains en recherche biomédicale.

Par cette pétition, nous souhaitons insister sur la nécessité de garder la possibilité d’avoir recours aux primates non humains, dans des circonstances exceptionnelles, lorsqu’aucune autre alternative n’existe. La recherche est déjà bien encadrée par la réglementation européenne, les chercheurs ont à justifier le choix de l’espèce utilisée et le bénéfice scientifique attendu. De plus, ils doivent garantir aux animaux un hébergement et des soins adaptés à leurs besoins. Ces dispositions font que l’utilisation en Europe des primates non humains ne représente que 0,1% des animaux de laboratoire, tandis que 90% sont des rongeurs ou des poissons. Comme l’exige la réglementation actuelle, les primates non humains utilisés en recherche, essentiellement des macaques, proviennent d’élevages agréés respectant ainsi les effectifs sauvages et la biodiversité. Les grand singes (chimpanzés) ne sont plus utilisés dans les nouveaux programmes de recherche européens depuis plusieurs années.

Cependant, le recours aux primates non humains reste encore indispensable pour faire progresser la médecine en particulier dans les domaines suivants:
- maladies infectieuses humaines qui posent des problèmes à l’échelle mondiale et pour lesquelles les primates non humains sont encore les seuls modèles pertinents (e.g. SIDA, tuberculose, hépatites, maladies émergentes…)
- maladies métaboliques ou dégénératives, atteintes irrémédiables liées au vieillissement (e.g. diabète, Alzheimer, ostéoporose, atteintes visuelles liées aux structures spécifiques des primates : dégénérescence maculaire, développement du cortex visuel….).

Si les autorités européennes interdisent l’utilisation des primates non humains, cette recherche se sera délocalisée hors de l‘Europe, dans des pays où la prise en compte du respect de l’animal n’est pas toujours une priorité.
La recherche actuelle en Europe a encore besoin des primates .

Research still needs primates

A strong lobbying of protectionnists towards European Institutions has led the regulatory bodies to question whether the use of Non Human Primates in biomedical research is still a necessity.

With this petition, we want to emphasize the necessity to maintain the possibility to use Non Human Primates in biomedical research, when no alternative exists. The european legislation already requires that the use of a given species is justified by the researchers according to the cost/benefit and that adequate housing and care is provided to the animals.
Currently, Non Human Primates represent 0.1% of laboratory animals used in Europe, compared to 90% of rodents and fishes.
As required by regulations, Non Human Primates used in research, mainly macaques, come from accredited breeding centers thus respecting wild populations and biodiversity. Moreover, since several years, no Apes (chimpanzees) have been involved in new research program within Europe.

Up to now, some research domains cannot progress without Non Human Primates:
- human infectious diseases, to which only Non Human Primates are also susceptible, that cause worldwide health problems (AIDS, tuberculosis, hepatitis, emerging diseases..)
- diseases caused by dysfunctions in metabolism, degenerative and aging process (diabetis, Alzheimer, osteoporosis, vision..).
If Europe bans the use of Non Human Primates, those researches will be relocated in non-European countries which may have less care for animal welfare.
Don’t stop now research in primates.
