Moms for Michael Phelps

We, the undersigned women and moms, feel that the actions by Kellogg’s to not renew their endorsement contract with Michael Phelps to be misguided and overly punitive. While we acknowledge that Michael showed poor judgment in using illegal drugs, his age and subsequent heartfelt apologies should be sufficient to enable him to move on with his life and career. Are there no members of the Kellogg’s board who themselves experimented as a young man or woman?

While we understand that Michael is being held up to a higher standard (as a spokesman for his sponsors) it must be tempered with the reality of his age, the culture in which he lives, and, not some unattainable corporate illusion of how we would like our kids to behave in the 21st century.

The fact that you could desert Michael (a 23 year old) for a momentary error in judgment in light of the incredible sacrifices he and his mom have made to help him make Olympic history says more about your company then it does about him.

While corporate greed has robbed millions of us of the American Dream; and, even more of us of jobs and our retirement this country needs to have someone to believe in and we feel Michael Phelps is that person.

If your corporation does not renew it’s contract with Michael we, the undersigned, pledge to boycott all Kellogg’s products until this injustice is rectified.

Don’t underestimate our resolve! This is not about Michael making money from endorsements. It is about the media and pop culture building people up to take them down. It is about corporate America (who at this juncture in our history) are the most unworthy among us to tout moralistic values at the expense of the rank and file that achieve greatness from hard work and sacrifice.

As women and mothers that support our kids; and, consumers that control the purse strings of our households we expect your company to do the “right thing”.

Re-instate Michael’s contract and show that your company is man (and woman) enough to admit that they made a mistake and that everyone deserves a second chance, even you.
