Petition to Ban the Use of Pesticides

CALL FOR MUNICIPAL BY-LAWS AND PUBLIC EDUCATION PROGRAMS TO ELIMINATE THE COSMETIC USE OF SYNTHETIC PESTICIDES

WHEREAS: Current scientific consensus is that common lawn chemicals create significant human health risks and pose a threat to our eco-systems(e.g. the Ontario College of Family Physicians, Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association, Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Lung Association etc.);

WHEREAS: The Canadian Federal Government Standing Committee on the Environment has concluded that synthetic pesticides pose a threat to human health and to the environment, have been linked to different forms of cancer, and “should be weeded out to protect our children”;

WHEREAS: Approximately 130 municipalities in Canada have implemented bans on synthetic lawn chemicals and are protecting their citizens;

WHEREAS: The Canadian court system has already determined that municipalities have the right and responsibility to pass a by-law prohibiting the cosmetic use of pesticides in order to promote the health of its inhabitants. Therefore, municipalities cannot be sued for having passed such a bylaw;

WHEREAS: Partial solutions, such as IPM (Integrated Pest Management) that allow continued and widespread use of lawn chemicals will not adequately protect children, pets and water quality from the dangers of synthetic herbicides & pesticides;

WHEREAS: chemical pesticides are unnecessary because sustainable, healthy and effective alternatives are available;

WE, the undersigned, petition Municipalities within the Province of Newfoundland & Labrador as follows:

To ensure a safe and healthy community by implementing Municipal by-laws and public education programs to eliminate the cosmetic use of synthetic pesticides.
