STOP PARKING METERS IN SARASOTA

To:  Sarasota City & County residents and visitors, City Commissioners, Mayor, Congressmen, Senators

Sign this petition and say NO to parking meters in Downtown Sarasota, Florida.

The City Commission of Sarasota has decided unilaterally to put in parking meters in downtown SaRasota. The ONLY real thing these meters will pay for is for more government employees to police the meters! The costs will far outweigh the returns, it will do NOTHING for the residents, and will hurt downtown shop owners. The idea is half-baked and we have received NO answers on costs for even the basic concerns:

- The City must recoup nearly a million dollars at 25cents each 15 minutes per meter before the system even pays for itself, - before ANY "profit" is generated.
- The City must hire and pay up front for multiple workers to DRIVE up and down the streets, policing the meters.
- The workers will, of course need vehicles, radios, uniforms, and other unlisted myriad tools to conduct their "business" of collecting revenue.
- Their new vehicles will need fuel, maintenance, tires, registration, repairs, eventual replacement, parking, security, insurance, etc.
- The workers will, naturally, qualify for benefits most of us can't even afford.
- There will be accounting costs, cash custody, banking costs, credit card fees, software, I.T., audit costs, and so forth.
- There will be administrative burdens, report costs, and more manhours.
- The list of hidden costs goes on ad nauseam.

Truthfully, responsible people aren't desired to park at these meters. The City wants folks to overstay their time, so they can generate far greater income on parking tickets! We already do this with our illustrious "parking enforcement" fleet on the timed, free parking spots....

STOP THE CITY COMMISSIONERS FROM PUSHING THROUGH THEIR PARKING METER AGENDA. IT WILL ONLY BE ANOTHER WAY TO CREATE MORE GOVERNMENT JOBS WE MUST PAY FOR, AND IT WILL BE YET ANOTHER BLOW TO THE ALREADY BADLY SUFFERING DOWNTOWN SHOPS AND BUSINESSES. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE SIGN THIS PETITION TO SAY "NO TO PARKING METERS IN SARASOTA!"
