STOP RACIST “PIRATES”
Portraying the Carib Indigenous Red “Indian” Nation as “cannibals” in a proposed, upcoming sequel to “Pirates of the Caribbean” (starring Johnny Depp) is unacceptable, with racist similarity to the european introduction of “scalping” – now blamed (through the “tomahawk chop”) on Indigenous Red Nations and Peoples who never committed such a barbaric european practice. A principal spokesperson of the Carib Nation, Charles Williams, stated that he talked with Disney producers who informed him that the “strong element of cannibalism in the script cannot be removed.”
Racism can and must be removed. The Caribbean island’s government said Disney planned to film in Dominica. Similar to how the early Dutch practice of scalping and bounties upon the heads and hair of eastern Indigenous Red Nations within what is now called the “United States” – and how this barbaric practice was blamed on the victims; “American Indians”, is similarly denied by the Carib.
We support the Caribs 3,000 survivors of the world’s largest, quickest, and deadliest holocaust ever witnessed at the hands of the european pilgrim, “Americans” of the once three million who were diseased, murdered, and enslaved in only the first few years after contact, - but who are still alive and breathing (and are wishing to dispel stereotypical racism against them) on the island of Dominica today.
We demand that shooting of the sequel (scheduled to begin in April 2005, with hundreds of Dominicans ignorantly applying to be ‘extras’ in the movie) be cancelled or postponed until a more appropriate script be re-written free of racism and genocidal bigotry, and that an apology from Disney offered to the Carib Nation and Peoples – with assurances that future movies be screened for nazi-type bias.
We call upon the French government to persuade Johnny Depp to refrain from participating in genocidal racism against the innocent and oppressed Indigenous Red nations and Peoples of Great Turtle Island (misnomer “western hemisphere”).
