Attention, Citizens of the European Union,

On June 12th 2008 the Irish people voted AGAINST the Lisbon Treaty (the result was announced the following day). The laws of the European Union, the very laws which all member states agreed to when forming part of the European Union, state that in order for a treaty to enter into force it must be ratified by ALL member states without exception.

In spite of this clear vote of no confidence in the treaty, other member states are encouraging those who have not yet ratified the treaty to do so anyway – in clear breach of the EU regulations. Featuring predominantly are the leaders of France and Germany. It is worth noting that France is next in line to the presidency of the council of the European Union. This situation was not present when they offered the people of France the option to vote on the European Constitution which was rejected. What is the situation this time round with Ireland?

Maltese MEP’s David Casa and Simon Busuttil said : “Perhaps it is time for them to decide whether they want to stay in the European Union.”
According to the Times Online on June 16th 2008, Jean Claude Juncker of Luxembourg issued an ultimatum to Ireland which sounded something like : “pass the treaty or else”.

So is THIS the inclusive European Union? The idea ‘that we like you as long as you are on our side’? Today, they are trying to ignore the Irish PEOPLE, NOT the government. How long before they start ignoring and silencing the citizens of other countries to get their own way?

How many of Europe’s citizens were even aware of what their governments were signing them up for? Speaking for Malta all we were told was that we were being given a sixth seat in the European Parliament. At what cost? Here’s what your governments have forgotten to tell you :

1) Giving the EU control over military activity. Unlike Partnership for Peace which allows countries to choose which operations to take part in, this grants total control to the EU. In other words, neutral states will not remain neutral and we stand to recreate situations like Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq. Only, instead of the United States of America, it will be the European Union.

2) The removal of national vetoes in approximately fifty policy areas. What does this mean? This means that if a country does not support a particular motion (such as legalisation of capital punishment) it loses the right to veto the motion and will have to implement it into its constitution if the rest of the EU decides so.

3) The President of the European Commission would be stronger. This is not bad at face value but the treaty does not place any restrictions to this power. When will we include these restrictions? When it is too late? No thank you, boundaries first – power later.

4) The European Union becomes its own legal personality. Thus, the EU has the right to sign ANY international agreements in the name of ALL member states without ANY consultation.

5) A reduction in the voting strength of small states such as Malta and Ireland.

6) Finally, European Law is placed on a higher pedestal than that of National Law meaning national parliaments can effectively cease function and let the European Union decide.

That is what your governments, OUR governments, hid from us. Our governments all refused to allow us to vote on the Treaty of Lisbon in a referendum and if it hadn’t been for the Irish constitution mandating a referendum for all changes to the constitution, the above six points would have become a reality in 2009.

And the European Union is not giving up. It chooses to speed up the process and break its own rules rather than work on a new treaty which deals with the above problems.

By signing this petition you are supporting the Irish vote against the Treaty
of Lisbon and asking the leaders of the European Union to stop beating a dead horse, declare the treaty as unsuccessful and work on a new solution. Marketers would refer to the situation as the European leaders becoming involved in a love affair with the failed treaty, while psychologists would claim they are in denial.

Even if you supported the Treaty of Lisbon, signing this petition is a vote of confidence in the democratic process which took place in Ireland as permitted by the European Laws. The same goes for internationals who are not affected by the Treaty of Lisbon but support us in putting a stop to the Treaty of Lisbon, as is our right.

Thank you all for reading this petition and I hope that you, together with everybody you know, will sign this petition in the interests of democracy and conserving the law of unanimous consent. With the exception of Ireland, none of us were given a say when it came to ratifying the treaty of Lisbon. Well, now is your chance. This is your platform. Let no voice be silenced in Europe because every single signature here counts. I repeat, this is your opportunity to tell the European leaders that you do not want the Treaty of Lisbon ratified, be it for personal reasons or so as to respect the Irish vote. You have a voice and the must listen. Make them listen.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned
