Stop Olbas Cruelty |
To: the Manufacturers of Olbas Oil"Olbas Oil" is highly prized by a number of "natural living" corporations as a natural antiseptic. It's used for treating colds, cuts, minor infections and the like, and 100% organic.
The problem is, it's about 0% humane. The active ingredient of "Olbas Oil" comes from a layer of soft fatty tissue which grows just under the surface of the Olbas' skin during Autumn, to help the Olbas survive Winter. Under that "winter fat" is another layer of fatty tissue which has none of the natural properties for which Olbas Oil is highly praised...in fact, this subcutaneous fat gives off a bitter oil which most animals fund offensive and sickening, which is why Olbas don't have too many natural enemies in the wild.
In most animals with a dual layer of fat, they'd kill the animal then rend the fat to oil mechanically. The Olbas is too small for that to be effective; additionally, the porous membrane that separates the two fat deposits quickly deteriorates after death, which allows the two oils to bleed together, making it useless for commercial purposes.
Here's the problem: how to rend the soft good fat to oil from the Olbas without releasing the bad oil just below it, and without killing them?
Tragically, the answer is simple: exploiting child labour in third world countries. That's right...the companies that sell Olbas Oil use children to extract the oil.
The average third world child weighs 40 kilograms, which is about the right amount of force required to squeeze the good oil from the Olbas without forcing out the bad oil. Huge vats are filled with Olbas and shifts of children, usually under 12 years old, spend hours of the day pressing the oil from tiny Olbas bodies with their body weight alone. If you've ever seen a dozen children stomping tiny animals until their skin ruptures, and listened to vast numbers of Olbas screaming in pain, you'll know how sickening this process can be.
The children are paid less than 10 US cents an hour. The Olbas, crushed but still alive, are dumped into the oceans to drown...with nothing but bad oil left, they can't even be used as pet-food. Apart from being horribly cruel, to both the children and the Olbas, this dumping of bad oil into the ocean has made entire sea beds of migratory salmon unfit for human consumption.
If you have a heart, do something to stop this inhumane practice. These international corporations are polluting fishing grounds, crushing living creatures and exploiting child labour all in the name of a few million dollars a year. Please, sign this petition and have this cruel practice stopped.Sincerely,
