We, the undersigned, would like to express our support of your decision to invite Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren as the keynote speaker at Brandeis Universitys 59th Commencement Ceremony on May 23rd , 2010.
We look forward to hearing Ambassador Oren address the Brandeis community at commencement based on his achievements and contributions to academia as a former professor at several prestigious universities in America and his work in Israel to promote the creation of the countrys first liberal arts college. Your selection of Ambassador Oren to address this years Commencement reflects Brandeis Universitys historic ties to the American Jewish community and timeless dedication to academic excellence as well as Justice Louis Brandeis own commitment to Zionism and Social Justice, a legacy on which this university was founded.
We acknowledge the issues that have arisen with Ambassador Orens invitation to speak at commencement. However, at Brandeis, we have been lucky enough to hear many esteemed and often controversial speakers. We have always listened critically and respectfully, demonstrating the intellectual maturity that makes Brandeis an institution characterized by academic rigor and reverence.
We call on all members of the Brandeis community to fully embody the rich academic quality and sophistication of our university and receive Ambassador Orens speech respectfully, regardless of personal opinions regarding the country that Ambassador Oren represents.
We, too, invite Ambassador Oren to join us in celebrating Commencement as a day in which we will reflect on our past accomplishments at Brandeis and look forward to the contributions each one of us will make as students of our University and its empowering tradition.
