To:  Facebook

Facebook was made for college students. It was a safe haven for anyone who wished to avoid the teenage fads of Xanga, or the universal lure of MySpace. It was created for an exclusive demography - particularly, a network of students who are, or once were, shelling thousands of dollars out of their pockets in order to be educated at a college institution. It was something sacred for those outside of it.

That was the case until February 27th, 2006, when the Facebook staff inexplicably disregarded any notion of exclusiveness that college students once had. That was the day that Facebook merged its college networks with its high school networks. Suddenly, you sign onto Facebook only to notice a friend request from a kid who sat behind you in orchestra. Next thing you know, you have the following messages appearing on your wall:

omg i cant beleive i cna now talk 2 u on facebook lol! *poke*

d00d join my group i started, its called "principle brown is a FAG"

so did u take that pic by urself or were u 2 drunk 2 hold the cam lmfao

I mean, really, it's bad enough that most of these kids will never step foot on a college campus (I don't know the statistics offhand, but I know that a minority of high school students actually attend college), but they do so with total disregard to the English language!

Furthermore, college members of Facebook are now directly exposing many underage kids to those things that come with age - drinking, sexuality, whatever. These messages, practical as they may be to any teenager today, should NOT in any way be allowed if it can be helped.

There are many other reasons against the merging of the Facebook networks. The only argument I've ever heard about the real reason the networks were merged? "Because a lot of people wanted it." You don't say. Sucks that you never realized all the people that DIDN'T want it - of course, they don't say anything because they're under the impression that such a travesty of an event will never happen, and people aren't going to ask for things to not happen. They signed onto Facebook because they thought it was a social network for college students, and now we are all easily subjected to the tripe that high school students call "conversation".

For the reasons stated above, we believe that the merging of the Facebook networks is a terrible idea. Shame on Facebook for ever giving into such an idea.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned
