Paws for Our Rights

To:  All animal owners

Dear Mr. Legislator,

My name doesn't really matter,it is my breed that does.

As a dog I am now food for the media ratings,whenever a dog bites or attacks,you don't see me as I sit now by my owners feet.Instead you see me as just another one of "those dogs" that are aggressive.

I was not borne that way.Just as I was raised to be a friendly happy dog,the dog that hurt that human,was raised to be aggressive.

My owners care for me,seek medical help when I need it ,vaccinate me,socialized me on days I know they would have rather stayed home all warm and cozy by the TV.I have never bitten nor chased,never willfully harmed or deliberately scared a soul.

My owners are one of many responsible dog owners,but they too will be punished for the misdeeds of irresponsible dog owners whom already disregard the laws and have no respect for their fellow man,woman and child.

Why is it that simple minded people in the media and in office,choose to legislate breed bans based on faulty statistical gathering?

Why do they ignore the fact that no authoritative organization anywhere in the world that has studied the problem in depth and have concluded that breed bans are not the solution,why is it that you contemplate one now?

They banned Pit bulls in England,yet the numbers of bites have increased by 25% in the year 2002-2003,they banned them in a small town in California and over 12,000 were put to death,and yet the numbers of bites didn't change.

Isn't it obvious that a dog no matter what it's pedigree ,can and will bite? Do you not understand that factors such as chaining us up for extended periods,no socialization ,no training,parents who use dogs as babysitters and leave them unattended with small children,leaving a dog unaltered sexually, allowing us to roam freely ,are all factors in the majority of factors behind why dogs bite?

So why I am different than the dogs that have bitten? Because my owners are responsible dog owners,they are caring members of society.My owners respect and abide by your laws.Sadly,I know they will leave your community if they have to make the choice,they love me more than their home.So much sadder a place yours will be should they leave.

No responsible owner should have to pay the price for a few irresponsible owners,no innocent dog should lose its life because of the actions,negligence of another.

I know that in the past it was not me that the media portrayed as aggressive and lethal,I am a Labrador and everyone loves me.....even when I was in the top five breeds involved in dog attacks in North America ,I was safe.The media loved me.

But now that there are no Pitbulls,sheppards rottweilers,dogos,filas,Dobermans,tosa,akitas left anymore in my hometown,I am the next sacrificial dog.....
