Religious Leaders in Dialogue
of Holland/Zeeland, MI, area
-- Statement on Repentance for the Iraq War

Background:
Many members of the Religious Leaders in Dialogue of the Holland/Zeeland area signed on to the statement last January in 2003; "We call on religious persons of every faith to express their opposition to the possible war (in Iraq) to the president, the elected leadership, and to the public at large and unless religious leaders speak out now, there will be no moral foundation to speak out in the future."

The Social Justice Committee and the Steering Committee of Religious Leaders in Dialogue now call on all religious leaders to seek repentance for what has been done.

WE REPENT...:

* For missing the reflection on the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the tenets of other faiths as having relevance to the use of violence against the country of Iraq and its people, notwithstanding the agreed brutality of its leader, Saddam Hussein. (Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11, as admitted by our President.).
* For falsehoods, deception, distortion of intelligence, intimidation of allies and violation of international law committed by the United States in the engagement of this war.
* For making the world a more dangerous place, despite the capture of Saddam Hussein.
* For relying on violence rather than peaceful ways of solving differences
* For all the deaths that have occurred and are still happening Americans, allies, and citizens in Iraq, including women and children
* For not respecting the people and culture of Iraq

We affirm:
. That love is stronger than hate
. That peaceful deeds overcome violent acts

Sincerely,

The Undersigned
