Rebuild the Twin Towers

Before you read this petition, I would like to assure you that no insensitivity towards the victims and their families of the terrorist attack is intended. Don't get me wrong, the loss of the twin towers doesn't compare to the thousands of lives lost. But since the lives can't be replaced, and buildings can, this petition has been created. Now, on to the point:

New York City's skyline is the most breathtaking in the world. On the tragic day of September 11, 2001, it was changed forever...or so they say.

At this moment, the space that the World Trade Center twin towers once occupied, is a pile of rubble. THE OWNER OF THE SPACE HAS VOWED TO REBUILD THE PROPERTY, BUT *NOT* THE TOWERS.

If we were to rebuild the 110-story towers, it would make a bold assertion to the world that America will not yield to terrorism. Although the four 50-story towers are reasonable, they don't replace the towering buildings that were once the focus of the beautiful skyline.

Of course, a memorial for the victims should be included.

We want the owner of the property, Larry Silverstein, to rethink his solution. If necessary, the new towers should be more structurally sound, and less prone to collapse. As you said, Mr. Silverstein, "We owe it to our children and to our grandchildren." But the proposed 50-story buildings won't be visible above the surrounding buildings.

Most Americans share this mentality. In a CNN poll, 52% said they want the towers rebuilt. Only 12% said they want a smaller complex. Of course, safety is a big issue for you. This is why you should make the buildings more structurally sound -- wider if necessary. Regardless, we cannot allow the terrorists to win.

In order to do this, we must rebuild the towers, even if they aren't an exact replica. We must make these buildings much taller than the 50-story complex that you envision. These buildings were a pinnacle of our prosperity, and some of the most recognizable landmarks in America.

Please Mr. Silverstein, rebuild these towers. Imagine what a powerful message it would give to the world. New York City just isn't New York City without them. We owe it to our children to make the skyline what it once was.
