Oppose the creation of a paved roadway along Double Oak Mountain at Oak Mountain State Park.

We, the undersigned, petition the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the Division of State Parks to reject the park development Master Plan which calls for building a paved roadway along the top of Double Oak Mountain at Oak Mountain State Park.

A significant part of Oak Mountain State Park has been developed for recreation, including a roadway which provides access by car to Peavine Falls and stunning views form the top of Double Oak Mountain. Most of Double Oak Mountain has been left intact as a natural wilderness area relatively untouched by human development. According to the current master plan for park development, public funds will be used to build a paved roadway through this wilderness area along the route of the "red trail" on top of Double Oak Mountain. With the construction of a roadway open to vehicle traffic, those who choose to explore the trails on Double Oak Mountain on foot will no longer enjoy a secluded and undisturbed setting. We, the undersigned, ask the Division of State Parks to reconsider this part of the master plan and conserve the natural state of Double Oak Mountain as a wilderness area free of development including roadways open to vehicle traffic.
