In response to the opinions expressed by a minority of alumni we, the undersigned, would like to respectfully convey to the Board of Trustees our support of the overall University and its current endeavors.
Though we are all entitled to our own opinions concerning the details of running our beloved University, we stand behind our school and are proud of its achievements. The past few years have been ripe with change, we recognize that University has attempted to both embrace our traditions while guiding our school into the onset of a new millennia.
The University is represented by no single employee or student; our history and our record of academic excellence speak for our community and are the foundation upon which we have built our future. It would be irreprehensible to characterize our schools modern history by the moments of contention rather than by the years of outstanding achievement and growth.
In the past five years alone we have refined and cultivated many of the attributes for which we are nationally recognized today. The generosity of alumni and hard work of the University administration have gifted us with new centers for Political Science and Science and have cleared the way for the recent groundbreaking of our much anticipated Athletic Center. Our athletic success has been sealed with announcement of our football team as Division Champions. In academics, a recent graduate was just awarded a national Rhodes Scholarship, an honor for all affiliated with the University.
Our giving rates are climbing, as exemplified by this years graduating Class of 2006, which has currently reached a class-giving rate of 25\% by the close of November. They have already outstripped the previous years annual percentages and raised more capital than the prior three-years combined. This passion and success is solely indicative of the overwhelming school pride and regard Richmond graduates have for our fine University.
To suggest that the changes of the past years have been detrimental to our school would be a blind accusation in light of our growing success nationally and within the walls of our own campus. Tradition and history all hold a vital position at our school, but to imply that our stepping boldly into the future is a deviation from our schools direction is clearly an ignorant charge.
We stand by our University, its administration and the endeavors to which it has dedicated time, capital and pride. Discussion and debate are signs of growth and if the recent controversies are growing pains then let us embrace and learn from them. The Board and President Cooper have been catalysts for the changes that have propelled us into a period of development and self-reflection, for that we commend you.
