This petition is to ask you to reconsider the merging of the Chandigarh College of Architecture as a department of Panjab Engineering College.

I would like to bring out here that the contentions made regarding Chandigarh College of Architecture in the applications are entirely incorrect for the following reasons:

It has been mentioned by them that Chandigarh College of Architecture was earlier a part of Panjab Engineering College, Chandigarh in 1961 and now it may again be merged with it. This has been done with a view to mislead the Administration. This fact is untrue as Chandigarh College of Architecture has always been an independent entity since its inception.

It has also been suggested that the Deptt. of Architecture at GZSCET, Bathinda and at GNDU, Amritsar, are part of Engineering College/Univ. with a view to imply that Chandigarh College of Architecture may also follow this pattern and be made a part of PEC deemed Univ. However the position in the matter is that the AICTE and Council of Architecture mandate that colleges of Architecture have to have a distinct set up with their own infrastructure, Principal and teaching faculty and shall not function under an engineering college whatsoever. In case of any deviation from the above, the college shall invite disaffiliation of the B. Arch. Course from the Council of Architecture.


It has been contended that there is no incumbent to take the charge of Principal of Chandigarh College of Architecture after 31 October 2008. There Is no substance in the statement as since 1st July, 1996 the charge of Principal Chandigarh College of Architecture has always been given to the senior most faculty member of the college and the same may be continued after 31 October 2008 till the time the post of Principal Chandigarh College of Architecture is filled up on regular basis through due process.

Chandigarh College of Architecture, part of the great Chandigarh Experiment and has always been a premier institute in the field of Architectural education for the Chandigarh Administration and any attempt to destroy the distinct identity of the Chandigarh College of Architecture (by merging it with some other institution, etc.) shall result in loss of an invaluable asset of the Chandigarh Administration.

It is requested that any move for changing the status of Chandigarh College of Architecture from a Government institution to a department under the Panjab Engineering College (Deemed Univ.), Chandigarh, or any other autonomous Institute/Univ. may be looked into in light of the vested interest of only two faculty members of the College.
