Economic Prosperity for a Better California

Dear Governor Schwarzenegger:

As residents of the state of California, I urge you to sign The California Dream Act, SB 1301. The California Dream Act will allow AB540, undocumented and out of state students, apply and compete for institutional financial aid.

The California Dream Act promotes individual responsibility by encouraging students who have been raised as Californians to become responsible educated adults and productive members of our communities. These future citizens should be encouraged to become teachers, doctors, and engineers and productive members of our workforce. It is in the best interest of our state’s economy to have an educated workforce to provide the innovation necessary to keep California competitive in the global economy.

The California Dream Act, SB 1301, would keep the promise of the Master Plan to provide an educational opportunity to California students. We acknowledge that this bill will allow undocumented students who meet in-state tuition requirements (California Education Code §68130.5) to be eligible to compete for institutional aid at all public colleges and universities to the extent that the federal law allows. These students have grown up in our neighborhoods, attended California public schools and can receive in-state tuition rates. Yet college is still a financial hardship for these children of low income families.

By joining the Power and Unity Coalition of faith-based, business, and education communities in encouraging the passage of SB1301, we can make the American Dream a reality for these children who will grow up to be productive citizens of this great state.
