Oppose State St./De la Vina St. Reconfiguration

PETITION TO STOP THE STATE ST./DE LA VINA ST. INTERSECTION PROJECT

CITIZEN PETITION

The City of Santa Barbara plans to tear up the now smoothly functioning intersection at State St. and De la Vina and replace it with one having narrowed lanes, more red lights, less on-street parking and increased traffic congestion. In particular, the right turn from State St. onto De la Vina would have a sharper angle, traffic would have to stop for a new red light, and the narrowed lanes would make it difficult for large trucks to navigate.

Incredibly, this project, costing at least $750,000 of your taxpayer money, would be funded through a State grant which has been specifically allocated for reducing traffic congestion!

Although the safety record at this intersection has been very good, the fact is there have been no pedestrian accidents here in at least 20 years, yet the City claims that pedestrian safety justifies this project. Many options are available for improving safety here, including signs and street markings, but the City has rebuffed suggestions by residents to install these, and signage at the intersection has been neglected.

The City Architectural Board of Review (ABR) has already questioned the need for this project. This project was on the first “Traffic Calming” ballot that was soundly defeated by the residents.

Citizen Petition

I oppose plans by the City to spend $750,000 of congestion relief money to reconfigure the State St.-De la Vina intersection, but do support alternate measures to improve safety, where needed. I am opposed to any plan that removes parking, adds to congestion and narrows existing traffic lanes.
