Students for Education Petition for Collaboration on Santa Rosa City Schools Proposed Budget Cuts

Seldom, if ever, have students had to rally for a decent education in a nation like the United States of America. Seldom, if ever, have students had to fight for basic educational resources in a state like California. Seldom, if ever, has an organization such as ours be necessitated in existence.





















The fact that our organization, Students for Education (SFE), must exist is a strong indicator of our legislative transgression. The fact that the SFE, whose purpose is to ensure that our local California school districts (especially Santa Rosa City Schools) have enough funding for basic resources, must exist is a strong indicator of student and community empowerment. The fact that the SFE exists is a strong indicator that these proposed budget cuts will never be swallowed by our local student and parent population.





















The proposed Santa Rosa City School District budget cuts include:





















• Closing all elementary, middle, and high school libraries










• Reducing middle and high school athletics by 50%










• Raising transportation costs for the severely handicapped students










• Closing 1 or more schools by 2010










• Eliminating "singleton" classes such as Journalism, AVID, and CAHSEE Preparation










• Eliminating Department Chairs










• Cutting pre-IB from Doyle Park Elementary










• Reducing 10% of IB at Montgomery, 10% of ArtQuest at Santa Rosa, 10% of the magnet program at Piner and more important programs unique to every high school





















Although we understand that some reductions must be made to compensate for our severe state budget restrictions on education, the time has come for parents, legislators, administrators and especially students to collaborate. We must now collaborate to achieve tolerable ends through creative solutions. Students currently have no means to influence the Board of Education's decisions and this we would like to change immediately.





















Please take our proposition into consideration and join us for effective collaboration and creative negotiation.





















Never, in this nation, has a student not deserved or been promised a decent education.
