Stop Sarkozy Bigotry
We, the undersigned, take objection to French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s parliamentary address in which he called for the banning of the Muslim ‘burqa’. The burqa is commonly described as a garment covering the body and head, which Muslim women wear to conceal their bodies when in public.
The call by Sarkozy has the potential to incite Islamaphobia on an even larger scale in France and throughout the world. We object to his prejudice against Muslim women who choose to wear the ‘burqa’. France preaches liberty, fraternity and equality. We ask Sarkozy to practice these ‘values’.
“… it is important for Western countries to avoid impeding Muslim citizens from practicing religion as they see fit - for instance, by dictating what clothes a Muslim woman should wear. We cannot disguise hostility towards any religion behind the pretence of liberalism.” President Barack Obama.
