BP has been injecting and spraying Corexit 9500 upon and into oil spilled in the Gulf of Mexico. The method is good for the oil company, because they can't be forced to pay for cleaning up oil that doesn't show up at the shoreline. But it adds far greater toxicity to the ocean's waters, both from the solvent itself (which is 3-4 times as toxic as the spilled oil) and by increasing the surface area of the oil itself.
It would have been illegal to intentionally put this noxious substance into the water before the spill. It is no less wrong to do so now.
We demand that the use of oil-based solvents, (including, but not limited to, Corexit 9500) cease IMMEDIATELY and not be used again. We further require that no solvents of any kind be injected into the oil below the surface and offshore, as doing so serves only to mask an even greater danger to the waters of the world.
