Abolish the NVTA

The Northern Virginia Transportation Authority (NVTA) has an established record of arrogance, poor decisions, bad management, and a blatant disregard for our constitutional rights as Americans and Virginians.

The NVTA collected millions of dollars in seven unconstitutional taxes which it was later required to refund. However, it is doubtful that the NVTA’s targets will ever be made 100 percent whole, as some taxpayers will remain unidentified and the NVTA is not providing market rate interest or refunds for administrative costs associated with the funds it took.

On February 29, 2008, the Virginia Supreme Court ruled that the General Assembly did not have a constitutional basis for delegating taxing authority to an unelected body such as the NVTA.

Unfortunately, NVTA is attempting to ensure its bureaucratic survival by engaging in a propaganda campaign. This has included censoring legitimate remarks made by concerned citizens on public forums such as youtube.com.

At the end of the day, the NVTA has failed in its mission. It has had its taxation powers invalidated as unconstitutional, and has been discredited with the public. It’s time to put this flawed, anti-democratic, unelected body to rest and move onto better solutions.

I support the immediate abolishment of the NVTA.
