Gamers Save E3 |
To: Entertainment Software Association and E3 ExhibitorsWe, the undersigned members of the video game community, are shocked and dismayed at the recent news that the E3 Expo will be cancelled for 2007. As gamers and independent journalists, we need and want a show at the scale of E3 to help celebrate, shape and influence the industry we love.
If the decision to restructure/cancel the E3 Expo is a monetary one, than what value does the ESA and game exhibitors put on the almost limitless volume of free press and buzz generated during the three day show? It is more likely that the decision is a result of the media transparency caused by the independent journalists and bloggers reporting on what they actually see and hear at E3, rather than the mainstream media reporting only the headlines that have been spoon-fed to them. Cancelling E3 will essentially silence the voice of the independent video game journalist. Moreover, the smaller, one-on-one events planned as an E3 replacement, will most likely prove a monetary and logistics improbability for smaller, independent video game journalists who count on E3 to expose them to press events, exhibitors and demos that they would otherwise not have access to.
On behalf of gamers and independent journalists across the world, we believe that E3 is worth trying to save, by voicing the importance of this event for the gaming industry. We are asking the ESA and game exhibitors to reconsider their decision to cancel E3 and take into account the people most affected by this decision: the independent video game journalists and the gamers themselves who will eventually purchase the products.
Sincerely,
