Stop the execution of Rogelio R. Cannady, Texas Death Row

Petition to stop the execution of Rogelio R. Cannady, who is scheduled to be executed on November 19th, 2008 by the State of Texas.

We are turning to you because we are deeply concerned about Mr. Rogelio R. Cannady, a death row inmate at Polunsky Unit in Livingston, who has an execution date on November 19th, 2008.

Rogelio R. Cannady, 36 years old, was sentenced to death in 1995. His death sentence was based on a fight that occurred between him and his cellmate Leovigildo Bonal. Unfortunately, Mr. Bonal died two days later from his injuries and Mr. Cannady was the first Texas prison inmate to be prosecuted under a 1993 statute that allows for capital murder convictions if the offender is serving 99 years or life as a result of previous murder convictions.

Mr. Cannady’s conviction is not only highly questionable because he claims self-defense. Also his prior murder convictions which had put him into prison under a life sentence were not justified.
We are convinced beyond a doubt that Mr. Cannady never had the intention of killing Mr. Bonal. He was threatened by Mr. Bonal and he only defended himself. He never wanted to cause the death of Mr. Bonal and he feels deep remorse for what had happened.

We feel deep sympathy for the family of the Leovigildo Bonal. Their loss is tremendous. However we do not believe that taking the life of Rogelio R. Cannady will ease their pain and suffering. We are asking you to grant Mr. Cannady a stay of execution and give him a chance for a punishment measured by his liability or to commute his death sentence.
