The undersigned respectfully ask that DOT revisit their decision rejecting our request to adequately protect and privilege pedestrian traffic moving between the South Street Seaport Front St pedestrian area, and Front St. north of Beekman St.
FACTS: Traffic turning West onto Beekman St. from South St. can not see, and is not otherwise notified, that they will be crossing a highly trafficked pedestrian node. In appearance, cars see a loading zone. In addition, pedestrians are often blocked from view by truck parking in the deadend area just north of the bollards that mark the end of the Front St. pedestrian zone. Pedestrian traffic is particlarly high in season and on weekends.
A dangerous situation exists that must be corrected.
We request:
1. Immediate replacement of previously existing STOP sign NE CORNER BEEKMAN & FRONT to control west-going traffic on Beekman St. approaching from South St.
2. Pedestrian crossing ahead signage, mid block (South and Front).
3. Speed bump mid block (South and Front).
