The writer and political activist Grace Paley (1922-2007) is no longer here to alert us to our follies and rally us to the streets or point us to the battlegrounds where precious lives are squandered. Her pain was never so great as when her own people—Americans, or Jews—were committing unspeakable acts of war. To honor her name, carry the torch—and on behalf of all our children and grandchildren—we call upon the Israeli government to desist immediately from the brutal attack on Gaza and we call on Hamas to cease firing rockets into Israel.
