To:  United States Department of Agriculture

We, the undersigned, seek to ban Solanum Lycoperiscum completely and immediately from the United States food supply.

Solanum Lycopersicum, along with its deadly cousin Atropa Belladona (Deadly Nightshade), contains poisonous Atropine in its stems and fruits. Accidentally ingesting Atropine (the principal poison in Solanum Lycopersicum) can lead to hallucinations, coma, circulatory collapse, respiratory failure, and death. As serious as the effects of Atropine ingestion are for adults, children face even more severe consequences, due to their weaker immune systems. In a given period of ten years, 79 people died of Atropine ingestion. Because Solanum Lycopersicum can be a breeding ground for certain diseases, it may have contributed to an additional 1,000 U.S. deaths in the last year alone.

Solanum Lycopersicum can be found in small-to-moderate amounts in many restaurants in the United States, because it is often shipped with common vegetables. However, removing Solanum Lycopersicum from the current food supply would present additional costs or loss of revenue, and consequently is not favored among farmers or government agencies.

Because we feel that the Atropine content in Solanum Lycopersicum can pose a threat to the health of a number of United States citizens, we ask the United States Department of Agriculture to immediately and thoroughly ban it from the public food supply, and to impose restrictions ensuring that the removal is permanent.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned
