Dear Professor Tan Ser Kiat,

We are surprised to know that Myanmar Prime Minster General Soe Win is now under the care of Singapore General Hospital. According to the TODAY newspaper, he is suffering from Leukemia. We use the word surprise because this visit has not yet been announced in Myanmar.

Being kind-hearted people, we feel sorry for anyone who is suffering any kind of illness. However, on the other hand, we are glad to learn the news for he is not the elected leader and has committed many crimes against the population including being the suspected mastermind of a deadly attack on the members of National League for Democracy, which led by Aung San Suu Kyi, and innocent civilians four years ago.

We wonder how the Prime Minister could afford this medical trip on his own. With a mere official Prime Ministers salary of Myanmar, there is no way Mr. Soe Win could afford the trip save the medical bills. We do not dare to question where this money comes from. Nevertheless, if this money are donated to the poor citizens of Myanmar, one of the least developed countries, by Mr. Soe Win, he could reach the heaven according to Buddhism even if he dies. Or he will be well praised by his citizens. But since human beings are selfish and that kind of donation is very unlikely, we feel parsimonious and disappointed with the money of unknown source.

We urge you to consider your decision before admitting other Myanmar officials. We are fully aware of the fact that doctors will always try to cure the illness of the patients. But, if the patients always claim their country has World Standard medical facilities and needs no foreign help, then shouldnt these persons receive the medical treatments in their claimed World Standard facilities? Besides, wouldnt SGH become a safe heaven for Worlds dictators? Or wouldnt the world regard SGH as a place where only money matters regardless of how the money was attained?

It has been so many years the dictators from Myanmar come here to seek medical treatments. But, there were no outcries over the trips. Even though we pity the patient and the families concerned, we urge SGH to stop admitting the Myanmar generals and officials as a form of protesting the dictatorship rule. By doing so, SGH would help cure the illness of 50 million people rather than a handful of generals. And the 50 million people will always thank the help SGH has given to them.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned
