Treasured mountain lifeways are being lost at an increasing rate in Western North Carolina, as land passes into the hands of real-estate speculators. As small towns and family farms give way to gated developments and golf courses, the culture of the mountains disappears and our communities suffer. Jackson County government, with the backing of the Governor's Office and the Div. of Water Quality, has the opportunity to stop Legasus of NC LLC from negatively impacting the landscape, water quality, water table, air quality and historic Moody Farm by reconsidering the vested rights for their 4000+ acres of proposed development, and by denying permits to construct golf courses at the top of our watershed on Cullowhee Mountain. Cullowhee Mountain is a treasured community resource and should not become a gated playground for a few, with its landscape permanently destroyed by golf-course development. Tell the JCC, the DWQ and Gov. Easley that we want:
No more gated developments
No more golf courses (and existing ones organically managed)
No pollution of our drinking water
No usurpation of water resources by the moneyed few
A tax system that favors local landowners, not real estate speculators
Farmland and historic farms preservation.
