University of Birmingham Crest |
UPDATE (23rd MAY 2005) Today a meeting was held with some of the high-ups. Many questions and queries have been answered, and issues raised. I, and others attending the meeting, view it as a sucess. When further details are available, they will be first posted on www.savethecrest.co.uk UPDATE (19th MAY 2005) Right, firstly let me thank you all for your support - it's been tremendous, more than i ever could have wished for. I've been getting about 30 emails a day off various people about the petition, and we've even made the BBC news. Today a new website was launched, http://www.general.bham.ac.uk/brand/ It's aim is to dispel our fears of the re-branding, and it does a pretty good job to tell the truth. There are, however, a few major points that it fails to address, namely: Why was nobody consulted? They say very clearly that people were, but I have yet to meet anyone who has been consulted, or even meet anyone who's met anyone else that's been consulted. With a petition now with well over 3000 signatures, I think it's pretty clear they didn't consult a proper cross-section of the student community. What's with the UB thing? Seriously... there's no need for it. I'm all for getting rid of the bastardised crest created in the 70s/80s and returning to the official ceremonial crest, so why do we need the UB thing at all? It's not cool, or at least it won't be in five years time and it's completely unneeded. What's the obsession with dropping the "The" from the University's title? A diligent signatory pointed out that official documents over 100 years old stated that forever would there be a university in Birmingham by the name of "The University of Birmingham". We're not an American institution, so why? Many staff and students are most angered at the lack of communication - this is the first time we've had hard and fast evidence of what's actually going to change. They (marketing services) can't detach themselves from the rest of the university - they're our ambassadors and they put across the image of the university (which we, when we graduate from the university, will have to carry with us for our entire lives) to the rest of the world. Please take some time to read the linked website and make your own mind up.
