Petition to Rename Kentucky's U.S. Highway 25E "The Daniel Boone Wilderness Trail"

To:  The Governor and State Legislature of the Commonwealth of Kentucky

We the undersigned respectfully request your consideration and approval to rename Kentucky’s U.S. Highway 25E, from the Cumberland Gap Tunnel to Corbin, "The Daniel Boone Wilderness Trail."

We have no objection to honoring Congressman Hal Rogers for his excellent work in the service of his constituents. We do, however, take strenuous objection to the proposition that anyone can be truly honored in permanently displacing the previous recipient of the honor, particularly when the displaced recipient is of the stature of Colonel Daniel Boone, no less the father of the Commonwealth of Kentucky and America’s greatest pioneer.

Because southeastern Kentucky’s “Daniel Boone Parkway” was renamed the “Hal Rogers Parkway” by former Governor Paul Patton in 2003, we believe it is imperative that, by the expressed will of the people, U.S. Highway 25E be renamed for Daniel Boone. Thus, the honor once given to Boone will be restored without taking away the honor recently bestowed upon Congressman Rogers.

Daniel Boone must be honored in this way! His and his family’s contributions to Kentucky and to the United States are immeasurable. Like Congressman Rogers, Daniel Boone served his constituents: in the Virginia Assembly in 1781. However, Daniel Boone’s service runs much deeper than having held elected office. He lost two sons and a brother as well as most of his wealth in his settlement of Kentucky, and he defended his country in 1782 at the Battle of Blue Licks, the last battle of the Revolutionary War.

Placing Daniel Boone’s name on US Highway 25E, which virtually traces the Wilderness Trail that he carved over two centuries ago, will remind motorists that they are driving along a most historic trail that was once wrought with hardship, danger and sacrifice: a trail that opened Kentucky and the Western Frontier to settlement.

Let us remind all who travel “The Daniel Boone Wilderness Trial” that they are following in the path of the brave men, women and children of a bold and young nation that followed Daniel Boone into the virgin wilderness and into an uncertain future full of promise and hope.
