Sweat-Free University of Minnesota |
To: The Administration of the University of MinnesotaUniversity of Minnesota apparel is being made in sweatshops. This is a problem.
The University has made steps towards addressing this by establishing a Code of Conduct to set standards for apparel manufacturers and by affiliating with the Workers Rights Consortium to independently monitor production. In 2000, U of M President Mark Yudof mandated, "The University of Minnesota must unequivocally insist upon safe, decent working conditions for those who manufacture University-licensed apparel."
These measures, while commendable, have not been enough. Seven years later, University of Minnesota apparel continues to be made in sweatshops.
We respectfully demand that the current administration immediately addresses this issue.
The University has invited to participate in the Designated Suppliers Program, an initiative seeking to advance the common goal of responsible institutions: ensuring that apparel bearing university trademarks is produced under humane working conditions.
Please accept this invitation.
Sincerely,
