Virginia Supports Burma’s Struggle for Human Rights and Democracy! |
To: Senator Jim Webb
Dear Senator Webb,
Support for the struggling people of Burma is a by-partisan issue that unites many corners of our state of Virginia. We recognize that the Burmese military dictator Than Shwe is engaged in a brutal campaign against his own citizens, destroying 3,300 villages in Eastern Burma, using rape as a weapon of war, recruiting thousands of child soldiers, shutting down numerous churches, pressing Burmese villagers into modern-day slave labor, and brutally suppressing the brave monk uprising in 2007. The Congress did the right thing when it listened to the calls of Burma’s democratically elected leader, Nobel Peace Prize recipient, Aung San Suu Kyi, and placed sanctions on Burma.
As Virginians, we urge you to strongly support more sanctions on Burma and an international investigation into crimes against humanity in Burma, in addition to active multilateral diplomacy with Burma’s neighbors and the international community.
Sincerely,
The Virginia Supports Burma’s Struggle for Human Rights and Democracy! Petition to Senator Jim Webb was created by Virginians and written by Katie Kosanovich (katie.kosanovich@gmail.com).
