SCDHEC is endangering the lives of pregnant women and babies by banning licensed midwives from attending out-of-hospital births for women with previous uterine surgery.
As doctors and hospitals increasingly deny normal/vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC), some women bearing cesarean scars are choosing to stay home to avoid the knife.
Women who elect to avoid the risks of repeat cesarean should not be denied access to the skilled care licensed midwives provide.
In the rare event emergent complications occur, the presence of a midwife (who can recognize complications early and recommend transport to a hospital) improves outcomes.
I support access to out-of-hospital health care and ask that DHEC remove its high risk designation of VBAC thereby lifting the VBAC ban.
VBAC is a safe option for women and babies!
