WORLD CONGRESS OF FAMILIES LEADERSHIP PETITION TO SAVE MARRIAGE IN MEXICO CITY

Whereas the Federal District of Mexico (which includes Mexico City) is prepared to take the radical step of legalizing same-sex marriage and adoption by homosexual couples on March 4, 2010 -- based on a law passed on Dec. 22, 2009 -- while the rest of the country will continue to define marriage as the union of a man and a woman

Whereas Mexicos President Felipe Calderon, the nations religious leaders and the Mexican people are adamantly opposed to the move

Whereas Mexicos Constitution defines marriage as between a man and a woman

Whereas every social ill has its origins in the decline of the natural family

Whereas government and society should do all in their power to preserve and protect the family

Whereas marriage substitutes by their very nature undermine marriage and the family

Whereas children need both a mother and a father -- a male and a female role model within the family

Whereas children raised by two men or two women are psychologically and socially disadvantaged

Whereas it is unfair for governments to subject children to social experiments to satisfy a politicians sense of equality

Whereas an attack on marriage anywhere is an attack on marriage everywhere

Therefore, we the undersigned pro-family leaders from around the world earnestly request:

That Mexicos mayor and city government not implement same-sex marriage

That the definition of marriage be resolved at the national level, with due regard to the nations religious traditions, the wishes of the Mexican people and the needs of children and families, and consistent with Mexicos Constitution

And that marriage in Mexico remain the union of a man and a woman.
