We need an R rating for video games in Australia!

Recently the Office of Film and Literature Classification re-assessed their rating system and updated it. I was frustrated to learn that they still refuse to give the Australian video game community an R rating for our games.

Why do ratings exist on our video games? To tell us what the ideal age group for the game is. Should we sit a nine year old child down in front of an MA rated game? No, of course not. Australian gamers are having to miss out on some promising titles because the OFLC refuses to give us an R rated category. One such game that was banned is Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, I went to my local Electronics Boutique store in hopes of purchasing it, only to learn that it had to be taken off the shelves because the OFLC ordered it to be. When I looked into it further I learnt of this so called "Hot Coffee" mod which supposedly unlocks sexual content that was already in the game. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't GTA:SA the sort of game that should only be accessible to adults anyway? The video game community is no longer just for children!

I find it completely absurd that the OFLC allow most games to contain tremendous amounts of violence, but if there is anything sexual in it, the game must be banned. I simply don't understand why we are allowed to be exposed to something as serious as violence, but not to something as natural as sex?

Therefore I urge any Australian gamers to sign this petition which I shall be sending to the OFLC should we get a reasonable number of signatures. If you have any friends who you think may be interested in having a say in this matter, then please spread the word!
