We, the residents of Montclair, categorically refute the petition for the deer management program proposed by an alternate petition. We reject the idea that the risk to our foliage, or concerns about tics in any way justify the culling of the deer population. An inconvenience to a few residents neither justifies systematic killing of animals, nor does it justify any additional costs to the residents of Montclair. Should any deer management program be undertaken in the future we call for transparency in its creation and humane practices in its implementation. Under no circumstances should these practices include sponsored hunts or other means of reducing the existing population, but rather they should be geared towards relocation of existing population, deterrence of undesirable behavior, or reduction of future increase in the deer population.
