Zimbabwe: A Call For The UK Government To Take Action |
To: UK Government, N.I AssemblyZIMBABWE: A CALL FOR THE UK GOVERNMENT TO TAKE ACTION
We believe in a lasting and democratic solution to the crisis in Zimbabwe. We issue this open letter urging the UK government and the Northern Irish Assembly to take urgent action to end the crisis in Zimbabwe to help to achieve this.
The situation in Zimbabwe is continually worsening and Mugabes brutal regime has intensified the violent suppression of democracy. Zimbabweans have made it clear to the world that they aspire to live in a democratic state and using non-violent means, the people of Zimbabwe have used all legitimate structures at their disposal: the courts, their parliament and the media, with little or no effect.
Without real pressure from the outside world (not just government sound bites and ineffectual sanctions) we believe that the situation will worsen at an ever-increasing rate. We believe that it is time that the UK government steps up to the plate and takes a leading role in resolving this issue, we appreciate that in a ‘politically correct’ world some may feel that this is the meddling of a former colonial power but we firmly believe that the UK has an obligation to make sure that the people of Zimbabwe receive the democracy they were promised at independence in the Lancaster House Agreement. Anything less can only be seen as paying lip service to the problems.
We believe the UK government must take unilateral action as the EU, AU, SADC and Mbeki of South Africa have proved to be completely ineffectual and in some cases complicit in propping up Mugabe.
As such in solidarity with the people of Zimbabwe we therefore demand immediate action from the UK Government through direct action.
