Justice for Aafia Siddiqui |
To: The Honorable Condoleezza Rice, Secretary of State, U.S. Department of StateTo:
The Honorable Condoleezza Rice, Secretary of State, U.S. Department of State
His Excellency Ambassador Husain Haqqani, Pakistani Ambassador to the US
Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Pakistan
We, the undersigned, are concerned citizens who wish to protest regarding the ongoing detention (five years of which was incommunicado) of Dr Aafia Siddiqui.
Dr Siddiqui is a Pakistani-born graduate of MIT and mother to three young American citizens. A frail and weak woman who has suffered from domestic abuse in the past, her current physical condition is serious, given unhealed gunshot wounds, removal of part of her intestines and other unconfirmed injuries.
Dr Siddiqui left Boston for Pakistan as a result of the intensified harassment of Muslims in America following 9/11. On a trip to visit relatives, she was kidnapped by Pakistani security services and subsequent leaked reports to the media claimed she was being transferred to the custody of the FBI. Dr Siddiqui’s whereabouts remained unknown for five years, until 4th August 2008, when she was confirmed to have been extradited to the US to face charges. Aafia Siddiqui claims she was detained in Afghanistan for years by the US and there she faced horrendous abuse that was both physical and psychological. The US has acknowledged that Aafia’s 11 year old son Ahmed is in custody in Afghanistan. The whereabouts of her two remaining children remains unknown.
We call on the US authorities to cease all use of incommunicado detention and torture, to release Dr Siddiqui’s three children back to the custody of her family, and to repatriate her to Pakistan, in line with the demands of the Pakistani National Assembly.
Sincerely,
