The undersigned believe the Alberta government should waive the provincial fuel tax on the purchase of biodiesel. Biodiesel is a totally viable alternative to petroleum-based diesel fuels. Removing the provincial fuel tax would make biodiesel less cost prohibitive to market in Alberta. And, since biodiesel has limited use in Alberta, the tax revenue loss would be next to non existent. The use of biodiesel in city fleets as well as consumer automobiles would not only create a new fuel market, and assist the agricultural sector, but would help Alberta contribute to meeting the Kyoto standards.
The federal government does not collect fuel tax on the sale of biodiesel. The Canadian provinces of Ontario and British Columbia also do not collect fuel tax on the sale of biodiesel.
We believe that this tax change would allow for greater consumer & industry choice in fuel, without impacting tax revenue or hurting existing fuel markets.
