Canada must immediately alleviate human suffering in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo |
To: Canadian GovernmentRecognizing that the situation in the eastern DRC is part of a larger conflict that has to date killed over 5 million people.
Recalling that Canada’s participation in Operation Artemis in 2004 alleviated human suffering.
Recalling that CIDA funding for DRC projects was $33 million in 2006/07 and $23.4 million in 2007/08.
Recalling that recently DRC rebels have raised funds for weaponry by stealing aid.
Recalling Alan Doss’ request for troops to bolster MONUC.
Recalling peacekeeper’s sexual misconduct in the DRC.
Recalling that Canadian companies have been accused of wrongdoing in the DRC.
Deeply convinced that as a major trading partner of the DRC, we must assume our leadership role and respond proactively.
WE, THE CITIZENS AND RESIDENTS OF CANADA, call on the Government of Canada and all elected Members of Parliament to take immediate action which will provide relief to human suffering in the DRC. As Canadians, we implore you to fulfill your promise of ‘never again’.Sincerely,
