No Public School Uniforms

To:  The School Board of Alachua County

We the undersigned students, parents, and teachers of the Alachua County Public School System, protest the proposal to force all students in Alachua County Public schools to wear uniforms.
Uniforms will not be solving the root of the “teasing or bullying problem”. If students that bully others about what they are wearing cannot do that as such anymore, they will simply find another outlet to bully them. Educating students on how to show each other respect would go much further.
By forcing students to buy a whole new wardrobe, their families’ costs will not decrease, but increase because they will need their uniforms, regular clothes for outside of school, and what is considered “church clothes” or fancier clothing. In addition, even if this does not increase the costs for families, then local businesses that sell clothing primarily to children and teenagers will lose business and potentially lose jobs for citizens of Alachua County.
There are multiple other arguments, but these address the main points that the board has made.
