Keep Aotea Square's MOUNTAIN FOUNTAIN in its original location

TO: Auckland City Council - Aotea Square Redevelopment Board.

This petition is to signify our whole & just opposition to the new location proposed for the iconic 'Mountain Fountain' sculpture by artist Terry Stringer in the new Aotea Square Redevelopment currently taking place.

The old original location of the artwork, which was slightly off center of the main square, where it has only just been removed from IS the ONLY location for this statue to go back to. It has been there for 27 years, provided many with pleasure and enjoyment from looking, lying, skating, climbing on top of it. With large crowds one might think of it as a hinderance but actually it is a very good crowd 'breaker' making it easier for people to move around.

The proposed location of where the Mountain Fountain is to go when construction of the square is complete is way off to the north western edge of the 'square' far out of range from public view from Queen St, as if it has been push to one side to be 'out of the way' but still paying respect to the artist by having it there. This is not good enough.
The original location of the sculpture is where it should go back to, where it can be enjoyed by all who come to the square for years to come, knowing it has been there in that same location for 27 years, through the Queen St Riots of 1984, Shihads 'Live At Aotea Square' Concert, so many markets, rallies, speeches, the list goes on. All we want is for it to stay where it was placed all those years ago.

As you can see, many people here feel very strongly about this matter. Public consultation with your redevelopment should be a number 1 priority to avoid the hiccups surrounding the Queen St Upgrade fiasco.

This iconic piece of artwork has been there for many of our lives while growing up in Auckland. While Auckland may change around it, The Mountain Fountain remains the same, and it should do so right where it belongs in its original location.
