Support Arklow Fishermen

To:  The Board of Management Arklow Harbour Commission

We, The Fishermen, Harbour Users and Concerned Supporters would like to inform you of our outrage at your recent proposal shown in the Wicklow People dated 17th July 2008.

We feel the Harbour Commission has completely overlooked and failed to account for the wants and needs of the local men and women who strive to make a living from the poor amenities offered at Arklow Harbour.

In 2007, discussion took place with relation to improving the facilities in the harbour area to ensure those using the area could do so safely and without unnecessary disturbance. The agreements reached and promises made by the Harbour Commission seem to have been ignored leaving the area unhygienic and unsafe for use by the fishermen and the general public.

The promise of new berths, storage units and even toilet facilities have never been realised leaving us, the users of the area, with no choice but to inform you that we will offer no cooperation in any future development of the Harbour until our needs have been considered and the most basic of facilities have been afforded us.
