Asatru Requested As Its Own Groups Category

This petition has been placed before practitioners, scholars, and the Folk of modern Asatru (Asatruar), to request that Yahoo Groups provide Asatru its own category on its directory page of "Religion & Beliefs" at http://dir.groups.yahoo.com/dir/Religion___Beliefs/

Asatru should be represented in its own, independent category in Yahoo Groups, and not sub-categorized under 'paganism'. Asatru is a living faith that should enjoy independent recognition like other polytheistic practices such as Hinduism and Shinto.

Asatru is the revived faith in the Aesir, the Gods of Northern Europe. Asatru is not best defined as "pagan" or "heathen". Webster's New World College Dictionary defines both pagan and heathen as one who is "not a Christian, Muslim, or Jew". By such definitions, Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism, Shinto, and the rest ALL should be called "pagan" or "heathen".

Asatru has 324 Yahoo Groups, compared to 254 for Jainism, and 19 for Shinto. In terms of internet participation and interaction, Asatru has considerable traffic, viability, and enthusiasm.

Many Asatruar and students of Northern European culture and history are members of the Asatru Yahoo Groups and have enjoyed its fine services. We feel that it will best serve us having Asatru as its own category.
