Astroboy made his first appearance as comic book hero Tetsuawan Atom. Astroboy became a worldwide hit during the 1960s with the release of a black and white cartoon that lasted 193 episodes. Astroboy once again rose to fame in the early 80s, entertaining a whole new generation of viewers with a colour cartoon series.

The Astroboy cartoons managed to engage its audience with action and science fiction, while at the same time focusing on important values such as family, racial awareness and virtue. Astroboy has not appeared on public television for some years, and yet remains a strong and popular social figure, and appears on many types of modern merchandizing including t-shirts, posters and figurines.
