Act on the Genocide in Sudan |
To: The Australian GovernmentIn response to the ongoing genocidal campaign in Darfur, including the deaths of more than 200 000 people, the displacement of nearly two million people, the continued presence of government armed and supported Janjaweed militias, and the persistence of Janjaweed and Government of Sudan attacks on villages in Darfur-
We call upon the Australian Government, like the U.S. congress, to recognise that the tragic events in Darfur do indeed amount to Genocide as defined under the U.N. 'Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide'.
We further demand that Australia use its influence at the United Nations to:
- Increase security by increasing the number of international troops in Sudan and giving them mandate to protect civilians as articulated under Chapter VII of the UN Charter.
- Impose an immediate arms embargo on the government of Sudan and rebel forces and implement specific sanctions (including economic and oil sanctions) against the government and any associated individuals or businesses.
- Support all efforts to bring to justice those responsible for the genocidal campaign in Darfur.
Sincerely,
