Draft Shirin Ebadi to Lead Iranian Freedom Movement

Honorable Lady,

The second inauguration of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on August 5th has completed the Coup d'état of July 12, 2009, with the outcome that, by disregarding its Republicanism, the "Islamic Republic" has come to an end. The question which remains is what will take the place of the current dictatorship.

We implore you to take the lead in ensuring that whatever type of government that may be, it reflects the genuine will of the people and respects universal human rights ideals, which ideals have deep roots in the ancient culture of Cyrus and Saadi.

We believe that you alone can transcend the political factionalism of Iranian resistance groups (both within the country and in exile) toward the end of bringing their most prominent and capable individuals together in a United Front. The purpose of this organization would be the establishment of an "Interim Government of Iran" responsible for freeing all political prisoners, removing all media censorship, and meeting any other conditions necessary for holding a wholly free and fair election, under the supervision of the United Nations or some other independent observers.

Madam Ebadi, with your international stature, you are uniquely qualified to prevent formal recognition of the Coup d'état regime, until such time as the interim government, under your leadership, officially comes to power in Iran.

Permit us to suggest that instead of the color Green (which is the flag of Qadafi's Libya!) the symbol of the Iranian United Front for Democracy and Human Rights should be our own tricolor flag, in the (central) white band of which these verses from Saadi would be inscribed in Nastaliq (caligraphy): "The Children of Adam are limbs unto one another, created out of a single essential treasure." We would be obliged if maestros Hossein Alizadeh, Kayhan Kalhor, and Mohammad Reza Shajarian would compose the Children of Adam poem (from which these two verses are extracted) into an anthem for national, and even possibly, global reconciliation.

We are aware that you have always steadfastly refused any direct involvement in political power and have never shown ambitions for a position of leadership. Yet is it not better for just such a person to lead our freedom movement? We cannot afford for the revolution of the people of Iran to once again be taken hostage by demagogues drunk on power.
