Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences (BAAS) in Interpreting at San Antonio College

This is a petition in support of creating a Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences (BAAS) in Interpreting at San Antonio College.

• The exemplary-rated American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter Training Program at San Antonio College (SAC) produces the highest quality certified interpreters in Texas. This is evidenced by the fact that more than 10% of interpreters in the state are graduates of the program. This exemplary department also includes an Enhanced Certification, Deaf Support Specialist, and a Trilingual (ASL, English, and Spanish) Program.

• The needs of the Deaf Community require more knowledgeable, educated, and highly skilled interpreters to satisfy the demand in the areas of medical, legal, and mental health. For this reason, National and State Certification Boards have established Bachelor Degree requirements as early as the year 2012 for all interpreters wanting to gain higher certification.

To summarize, the SAC Interpreter Training Program already has in place the foundation to support a successful BAAS degree. Recent statistics show San Antonio to be a “Top 10 Growth City” in the United States. This, together with the strong community and corporate support already in place and the proven track record of the SAC ASL Interpreter Training Program, indicates that the BAAS degree at San Antonio College warrants my very strong support.
