Texas Prison Abuse Incident

To:  TDCJ, Captain Losack, Senator John Whitmire, Senator Rodney Ellis, Representative Terri Hodge, Representative Jessica Farrarr, and anyone else who this may concern

Regarding an incident of prison abuse.Inmates should not be treated inhumanely, and officers in charge should do their job in a humane way. The abuse took place at TDCJ Wynne Unit, Huntsville, Tx. 77349
An older inmate ( Edward Albert Jordan, #640294)who is unable to walk without a cane was in the dayroom on February 24, 2005 approximently 4:00 PM. Officer Archie was working that cellblock. The inmate approached Officer Archie, and told 3 seperate and distinct times that he needed to use the toilet(which is app. 25 feet from where he was).
The last time he asked, Officer Archie asked Lieutenant Jeffrey Springer, who told her to "leave him in the dayroom with the rest of them". Officer Archie then told the inmate "No" he colud not go.
Witness's claim it was obvious he was in great discomfort, and finally unable to wait any longer, squated down by the door and defecated. This was done in front of 50 other inmates. Officer Archie, then went to the door and called for supervisors.
A female lieutenant, Sgt. Calvin and shift supervisor Captain Barkin showed up. Inmate Jordan was in the process of cleaning it up with paper when supervisors showed up.
The prison janitor was called, and showed up to clean it. Inmate Jordan was taken away and given disciplinary charges,and placed in lockup. The staff was said to have laughed about this incident later.
Inmate Jordan was given a major case for "defecating in the dayroom and causing a disturbance". Was given 5 days in solitary and 30 days commissary restriction. The female officer admitted at his hearing that he asked to go to his cell, but Captain Losack, disciplinary hearing officer found him guilty anyway.
We the undersighned feel that treatment and conditions need to be investigated. This incident could have been avoided had this inmate got permission in the first place to go to his cell. We are outraged at this inhumane treatment and want action to be taken so that incidents such as this do not continue to happen. This inmate isn't in prison to be degraded, humiliated, abused, etc.
